我第一次来看张爱玲住过的上海常德公寓还是在1985年，那个时候不太知道她，就是来看这栋1933年的精彩Art Deco风格现代建筑，叹为观止。之后她在中国文学史上的地位因为夏志清、李欧梵教授他们的论述而越来越高，这一栋建筑就越来越出名了。时隔几十年，我昨天下午抽空跟顾卫民老师再去去看看，虽然被周边树林一样矗立的高楼大厦弄得有点沮丧，但是还是很开心。常德公寓在常德路195号，网上有人说是非常女性化的大楼——“肉粉的墙面夹杂咖啡色的线条，多半是时间的关系，这幢大楼看上去有些暗暗的色调，仿佛沾染了灰的，旧日里女人用过的胭脂扣”。楼前一排梧桐，倒是依旧生气勃勃的模样。深秋时节，法国梧桐和银杏叶子金黄，感觉依然如故。这栋建筑在南京西路和常德路交叉口，张爱玲在这里住过很多年，这栋楼当年的名字是爱丁堡公寓（Edingburgh House），始建于1933年，建成1936年，开发商是意大利人拉乌尔斐斯。常德路当年赫德路。张爱玲和她姑姑张茂渊住在一起，两人各居一室，有自己的卧室和盥洗室，中间有厨房相连，要见面开门即可，但若不想见面，也可从消防门进出，可算各有私人空间。张爱玲1939年到1942年间住在51室，1942年以后住在65室，直至1948年。她的《公寓生活记趣》说的便是这座大楼里的喜忧了。张爱玲在这里完成了小说《倾城之恋》、《沉香屑——第一炉香》、《沉香屑——第二炉香》、《金锁记》、《封锁》、《心经》、《花凋》。此期间还发生了另一段重要的故事，就是张爱玲与胡兰成相识、相爱到秘密结婚。楼下有一家书店，就是她书里写的“凯司令咖啡馆”，里面依然有咖啡，摆了很多关于她的书。我在这里拍了一点照片，就怕现在依然扩张的房地产不知道哪一天会影响这栋楼了。
